Our country has witnessed bomb blasts, insurgency, cross-border attacks and radicalisation in many regions. To address these challenges, India previously employed two robust anti-terror laws: the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities Act (TADA) and, later, the Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA). Both laws were powerful. They gave the government and police more authority to act quickly in the terror cases.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But these laws also came with debates, criticism and controversies. Were they needed to protect the nation? Or were they misused?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Understanding this question is important for students studying in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/admissions.srmuniversity.ac.in\/\"><b>good law colleges in Delhi<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where legal education motivates examining both sides of a law, like the purposes and the impact.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Was_TADA\"><\/span><b>What Was TADA?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TADA was introduced in 1985. India was facing serious threats at that time, especially in Punjab during the Khalistan movement. They believed that TADA gave too much power to the police. But in 2001, the Parliament attack shook the entire nation. The government felt an urgent need to create a law to prevent and respond to terrorism quickly. So in 2002, POTA was introduced.
