Consumer rights refer to the fundamental entitlements and protections granted to individuals who engage in the consumption of goods and services. These rights aim to ensure fair treatment, safety and transparency in transactions between consumers and businesses. The theme for World Consumer Rights Day 2024, “Fair & Responsible AI for Consumers,” focuses on imparting financial wisdom to young adults, particularly students. As part of the celebration, an enlightening discussion on “Fair & Responsible AI for Consumers” was conducted by the Centre for Corporate, Competition & Insolvency Law (CCCIL) and Centre for Law & Technology, the research centres of Faculty of Law, SRMUH. This report provides insights into the discussion, detailing its purpose, speakers, key topics covered. Purpose of the Webinar: Understanding the theme of “Fair and Responsible AI for Consumers” on World Consumer Day 2024 is essential as it empowers individuals to navigate the increasingly AI-driven marketplace with awareness and vigilance. By comprehending the ethical implications and potential risks associated with AI technologies, consumers can make informed decisions, advocate for their rights, and hold businesses and policymakers accountable for upholding fairness, transparency, and accountability in AI development and deployment.

Event Details:

The Discussion took place on March 15, 2024 from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM. Prof. (Dr.) Vijay Kumar Singh, Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Law, served as the panelist, offering valuable insights on why consumer rights day is celebrated, the Six rights of consumer and Dr. Yatin Kathuria, Assistant Professor, shared interesting facts about how AI is affecting E-Commerce platforms. He also focussed on key ethical and legal concerns associated with utilisation of AI by E- Commerce platforms. Ms. Raka Medhavi, Assistant Professor, vigilantly moderated the session, ensuring a smooth flow of information and interaction.
